Cournoyer captures first Canadian all-around senior title at 2018 Canadian Championships in Artistic Gymnastics
Gymnastics Canada – WATERLOO, ON (May 26, 2018) – René Cournoyer of Repentigny, QC can finally add Canadian senior all-around champion to his list of accomplishments as he topped the podium at the 2018 Canadian Championships in Artistic Gymnastics today in Waterloo, Ontario.
Cournoyer laid down solid performances on every apparatus to finish the all-around competition with 83.100 points, almost two points ahead of Jackson Payne of Calgary, AB who secured the silver medal with 81.500 points. Commonwealth Games double silver medallist Cory Paterson of Montreal, QC finished with a score of 78.700 points to round out the podium.
When asked how it felt to be the new Canadian champion, Cournoyer was all smiles: “It’s so awesome, I’m so happy,” he said. “I had a very good day; every event went pretty well. I had solid routines, good executions, and I’m happy with the scores as well. I had a few routines watered down due to injuries, so I’m looking forward to getting back into those events tomorrow [for the apparatus finals] and putting it all out there.”
Cournoyer finished in the top eight on all six apparatus and will have the opportunity to colletct more hardware on Sunday in the apparatus finals. Cournoyer, who also captured a silver medal in the team event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia in April, will use the experience gained from those games as he prepares for Sunday’s finals: “It’s less pressure here than it was at the Commonwealth Games, but the expectations are the same. The games were only a few weeks ago, so it was a great preparation for this competition.”
In the junior women’s all-around competition, it was Zoé Allaire-Bourgie of Montreal, QC who stood atop the podium with 126.948 points. 2018 Elite Canada all-around champion Emma Spence of Cambridge, ON finished with a score of 119.799 to secure the silver medal, while Rachael Riley of Sarnia, ON scored 115.374 to finish with bronze.
“I’m really happy, I worked really hard to earn my medal,” said Allaire-Bourgie.
Allaire-Bourgie also took home gold on uneven bars and beam, in addition to winning silver on vault. Mia St. Pierre of Quebec won gold on floor and vault.
Félix Dolci of Laval, QC won the gold medal in the junior 16-17 men’s all-around final with a score of 104.850. Evgeny Siminiuc of Ontario captured the silver medal with 103.125 points and Kenji Tamane of Ontario rounded out the podium with a score of 100.850 to capture bronze.
“I’m pretty happy about winning because I just came back from multiple injuries, so I’m happy to be on top of the podium at the National Championship,” said Dolci following competition. “I’ve qualified for all six apparatus finals tomorrow, so I’m looking to increase my floor routine as well as rings and try to get medals in every final.”
Sunday is the final day of competition at the 2018 Canadian Championships in Artistic Gymnastics and will feature both senior and junior men’s apparatus finals in addition to day two of the senior women’s competition where the all-around and apparatus champions will be crowned.
