Judo Canada – Montreal, December 17, 2017 – Étienne Briand was eliminated in the first round by Argentina’s Emmanuel Lucenti on Sunday in the -81 kg weight category at the World Masters’ Tournament in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

The judoka from Sept-Îles lost his first match by ippon after receiving a penalty in a short-lived combat. While he did not rank, Lucenti went on to place seventh.

“It didn’t go well at all. This is an opponent that I’ve beaten in the past. But I’ve also lost to him before in what was a very frustrating situation,” explained Briand. “I should have beaten him last time. Today, I think I was too focused on getting revenge. I was too emotional.”

Briand admitted to making a number of errors. “Quite frankly, I wasn’t thinking about much. I tried to make him fall before even getting my hands on him or destabilizing him. It wasn’t an effective strategy. And I received a penalty because I attacked a little too quickly,” he concluded. Briand will spend the next two weeks resting.

The local favourites put on an impressive performance in today’s competition. Russia’s Khasan Khalmurzaev scored an ippon against his fellow countryman, Aslan Lappinagov, to claim the gold medal. Alan Khubetsov, also of Russia, and Frank De Wit, of the Netherlands, placed third.
