Diving Plongeon Canada – VICTORIA – Tatiana Conn of Calgary was the big star this weekend at the 2017 Junior Development Nationals diving competition as she collected a third gold and second Canadian record on Sunday.

On girls 12-13 age group platform, Conn earned 364.80 points breaking the national age group mark of 359.80 set by Lindsay Leonard in 2012. Kate Miller of Ottawa was second at 332.25 and Katelyn Funk of London, Ont., third at 327.65.

‘’This was definitely the best of my three wins,’’ said Conn. ‘’I was very nervous for the platform event and I didn’t feel I was the  favorite going in. I was also trying new dives that I had only started practicing recently.’’

Carson Paul of Victoria notched a second gold in the boys 12-13 platform with 364.90 with Édouard Juteau of Blainville, Que., second at 350.15 and Matt Cullen of Blainville third at 342.00.

A Canadian age group record was also set in the girls 11 and under with Maika Januario of Montreal earning 309.40. The previous mark of 307.75 was set last year by Kate Miller of Ottawa.

‘’I really didn’t think I could break the record,’’ said Januario, also the one-metre winner. ‘’It wasn’t something I was focused on so I’m proud to put together such a performance.’’

In boys 11 and under one-metre, Emmitt Reesor of Kitchener, Ont., was first at 256.80, Nigel Chambers of London, Ont., second at 250.00 while Loic Tremblay of Quebec City, who was looking to complete a golden sweep, took third at 236.15.

‘’I had more focus and followed the game plan a lot better today,’’ said Reesor.  ‘’My back one and a half was my best dive today. I got a good reach and a good kick-out. I’m proud to get the win.’’

A total of 85 athletes from 22 clubs were at the three-day competition. These championships also served as trials for the upcoming Pan American Junior Diving Championships, scheduled for Victoria September 28 to October 1st, 2017.
