Competition Heats Up for Canada at the World Junior Racquetball Championships
Racquetball Canada – San Luis Potosi, MEX, November 17, 2016 – Team Canada is through it’s first day of the elimination round at the World Junior Racquetball Championships being held in San Luis Potosi, Mexico from November 12 to 19, 2016
Canada is represented by ten athletes from five provinces including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Québec. Coaches Michel Gagnon and Rino Langelier are from Montréal, QC and Coach Corey Osborne is from Penetanguishene, ON.
Canadian athletes were successful in the first three days of competition, which consisted of round robin play to determine the seeding for the elimination round. However the first day of the elimination round was tough for Team Canada in the singles events. Alexis Iwaasa of Lethbridge, AB and Trevor Webb of Cambridge, ON remain as the only medal hopes for Canada in singles competition.
In Boy’s 14 & U Singles, Ian Frattinger of Martensville, SK went undefeated in his pool so was well seeded in the elimination round. However, Frattinger came up against a hot competitor from Colombia and was eliminated in the round of 16.
Frattinger and his partner Sean Sauvé of L’Assomption, QC finished second in their 14 & U Doubles pool and had a bye to the round of 8.
Alexis Iwaasa won her pool and is seeded first in the elimination round in the 16 & U Girl’s Singles, giving her a bye to the round of 8.
Team Canada had two other second place finishes in pool play from Kaleb Osborne of Penetanguishene, ON in 16 & U Boy’s Singles and Juliette Parent of St-Jacques De Montcalm, QC in 14 & U Girl’s Singles.
Osborne had a bye in the round of 32 and lost in a tie breaker in the round of 16. Parent was unable to advance to the round of 8.
