Commonwealth Games record for Masse in Day 2 prelims
Swimming Canada – GOLD COAST, Australia – Kylie Masse got off to a fast start on her quest for Commonwealth Games gold Friday in Gold Coast, Australia.
The world-record holder in the 100-m backstroke added a Commonwealth Games record to her resume, with a morning heat swim of 58.70 to advance to semifinals in top position. The Windsor, Ont., native won the fourth and final heat just minutes after Australian Emily Seebohm had lowered her own record to 58.91, good for the No. 2 seed entering semis.
Taylor Ruck of the High Performance Centre – Ontario, fresh off her two-medal opening night, advanced in sixth at 1:00.72, while Jade Hannah (Halifax/HPC-Victoria) also moved on, earning 11th seed in 1:01.51.
Ruck also advanced to semis in the 50-m freestyle (4th, 25.13). She and HPC-Ontario teammate Kayla Sanchez (7th, 25.47) raced on either side of Australian Cate Campbell in their heat. Campbell, who anchored the home country to gold in the 4×100-m freestyle relay Thursday with a relay split of 51 seconds, advanced in first at 24.24.
Canada’s 4×100-m men’s freestyle relay, and Torontonian Tristan Cote of the University of Calgary advanced straight to finals. Cote’s 400-m individual medley time of 4:18.73 was good for fourth seed, while Yuri Kisil, Ruslan Gaziev, Jeremy Bagshaw and Carson Olafson qualified for their final in fifth with a heat swim of 3:19.30. Australia (Cameron McEvoy, James Magnussen, Jack Cartwright, James Roberts) went a Games record 3:12.72 to cap a loud morning in front of nearly 10,000 fans at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.
Also advancing to semifinals for Canada was Eli Wall (Ottawa/University of Toronto) in the men’s 100-m breaststroke (10th, 1:01.77)
