TOKYO (July 22, 2021) — The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) issued the following statement on the size of the Canadian contingent at the Tokyo 2020 Opening Ceremony:

“Due to the Olympic Village arrival rules outlined in the Tokyo 2020 Playbooks, athletes are only arriving in the Village five days before they compete. This means that there are less athletes in the Village and that most of them are on the verge of competing. The focus of Team Canada remains on safety, performance, and adhering to the letter and spirit of the Tokyo 2020 Playbooks. For these reasons Canada is expecting to have approximately 30 to 40 athletes marching in the Opening Ceremony. Canadians will be proud to see athletes marching behind Flag Bearers Miranda Ayim and Nathan Hirayama, who will represent all 370 members of Canada’s Tokyo 2020 Olympic Team. Despite the incredible challenges of the past year this is Canada’s largest Olympic team since Los Angeles 1984.”
