Alberta Sport Connection – Airdrie, AB – The City of Airdrie has been successful in its bid to host the Alberta Winter Games in February, 2020. The Games provide an opportunity for Albertans 11 – 17 years of age to compete in a province-wide winter sports competition.

“Congratulations to the City of Airdrie for its hard work in putting together a wonderful proposal to host the 2020 Winter Games,” said David Eggen, Minister of Culture and Tourism. The Alberta Games are an important step in the lives of our young athletes. Promoting sport is a priority for our government and I’m confident Airdrie will do a great job hosting these Games.”

More than 2,700 participants, their families and spectators are expected to attend these events and participate in a wide variety of sports from skiing, hockey, biathlon, curling and speed skating to synchronized swimming, fencing, artistic gymnastics, volleyball and boxing. The Alberta government will provide $370,000 in support of the 2020 Alberta Winter Games through Alberta Sport Connection (ASC), which includes a cultural grant of $70,000.

“These Games will be a great opportunity for Airdrie to showcase its community”, said John Short, Chair of ASC. “We look forward to working with them and welcoming athletes from across our province to the 2020 Alberta Winter Games.”

The Alberta Winter Games are coordinated by the Alberta Sport Connection in partnership with the host community. Participants earn the right to take part in the games by qualifying through zone playoffs held for each sport throughout the province.

It is estimated that the Alberta Games generate an economic impact of about $3 million for host communities.
