Canadian Interuniversity Sport – TORONTO (CIS) – The reigning champion UNB Varsity Reds and York Lions are back on top of the CIS national rankings in men’s hockey and soccer.

UNB (3-0-1), which opened the season at No.2, won its fifth title in the last decade at last winter’s CIS Championship. After going 1-0-1 in their first weekend against Moncton (1-3-0) and UPEI (2-1-1) – including being upset 4-3 in a shootout to the Panthers – the Varsity Reds rebounded with a sweep of both teams this week with a 3-1 win over UPEI in Charlottetown, followed by a 9-2 victory over the Aigles Bleus. UNB continues its three-game road trip with a visit to Dalhousie (2-1-1) Saturday before playing No.2 StFX (3-1-0) Sunday in a rematch of the 2016 gold medal game.

In men’s soccer, York (12-0-2), which held the No.1 ranking for the first four weeks of the season, leapfrogged back into top spot over Ryerson and Alberta thanks to a pair of home wins last week: 4-2 over No.4 Guelph (10-2-2) and a 2-0 clean sheet against Brock (2-8-4). The Lions wrap up their regular season hosting Western (5-4-5) on Saturday and Windsor (4-6-4) Sunday.

In other CIS sports, Montreal (women’s hockey), Laval (men’s cross county and women’s soccer), Guelph (women’s cross country) and McMaster (women’s rugby) all maintain their pole positions.
