Chuba Hubbard named Winner of the Cornish Trophy

Vancouver, BC/Hamilton, Ontario – After an electrifying season where he led the NCAA in rushing, Oklahoma State redshirt sophomore running back Chuba Hubbard was named the top Canadian in NCAA Football in the 2019-20 season. The native of Sherwood Park, Alberta was humbled by being recognized as the standard bearer for his country stateside.

“It’s an honor to represent Canada, Alberta and my family in accepting this award, and acknowledging all the hard work I’ve put in,” Hubbard said.

The Bev Facey grad and former Football Alberta team member the led the FBS in rushing with 2,094 yards, rushing yards per game at 161.1, 200-yard rushing games and all-purpose yards per game. Hubbard, a.k.a. “The Canadian Cowboy”, was a unanimous All-American, the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, a finalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award and one of three national finalists for the Doak Walker Award presented to the nation’s top running back. Hubbard finished eighth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy, the third best finish for a Canadian.

Hubbard tied for third in the FBS and first among all players from Power Five conferences in rushing touchdowns. He led the Big 12 in both points scored and total touchdowns. He was the only player in the Big 12 to average more than 100 rushing yards per game, Hubbard’s 161.1 yards per game were 64.6 yards per game more than anyone else in the league. His season total of 2,094 rushing yards ranks 16th in FBS history and third in Big 12 Conference history. He rushed for more than 100 yards in each of his last 11 games, which was the longest active streak in the nation. His 2,094 rushing yards set the second-highest single-season total in school history, trailing only Barry Sanders’ Heisman Trophy season of 1988

The class Hubbard was competing with was by many estimations the best Canadian class in the history of NCAA football.   “I think that’s everyone’s dream in Canada who plays football is to go to the NCAA and play football or some type of sport. It shows that Canadians are just as talented, they work just as hard,” Hubbard said of his competition for the Cornish.

“Nathan (Rourke), Neville (Gallimore), all of those guys are completely talented, crazy hard-working guys. Claypool is an MVP. Just to see what those guys are doing for Canada is awesome,” Hubbard said.

Hubbard’s teammate, junior linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga from the Notre Dame Pride high school program in Calgary was also a nominee.   For Hubbard, playing all of his senior high school football at Bev Facey gave both him and his family stability.

“I always moved my entire life; I was never really in one place. Coming to Sherwood Park, I never really felt that I was going to stay long enough to play my full high school there. But the bonds I grew there, I liked my football team a lot, I had a lot of good friends there. I thought that if I was good enough, they (schools) would find me. I was fortunate enough to be on a really good team with a lot of good players and we got the spotlight. I got a lot of people to acknowledge me and notice my film and it just took off,” he said.   Hubbard committed to coming back to Stillwater for his junior year in 2020. Like the rest of the football world, we don’t know what the season will look like dur to the Coronavirus.

“That’s the hardest thing for everyone right now. When is it going to start? It would be nice to have a schedule, but you just have to stay ready.”   The Cornish Trophy was awarded via a live stream. The original plan was to present the award to Hubbard before the OSU spring scrimmage in Stillwater, April 18. Organizers have promised to bring the trophy to him to place his signature on the back of it like two-time winner Nathan Rourke of Ohio in 2018-19 and 2019-20.   The Cornish trophy was selected by 20 reporters, CFL player personnel staff and other experts in two rounds of voting at the conclusion of bowl season. The trophy is on display at the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in Hamilton, Ontario.

Vancouver (C.-B.) et Hamilton (Ontario) – Après avoir offert des performances électrisantes au cours d’une saison où il a mené la NCAA au chapitre des gains au sol, le demi offensif de deuxième année d’Oklahoma State Chuba Hubbard a été nommé joueur canadien par excellence au football de la NCAA au terme de la saison 2019-2020. L’athlète originaire de Sherwood Park, en Alberta, a été touché de recevoir cet honneur qui est remis au joueur canadien s’étant le plus distingué dans le circuit universitaire au sud de la frontière.

« C’est un honneur de représenter le Canada, l’Alberta et ma famille au moment d’accepter ce prix, et qui reconnaît tout le travail acharné que j’ai investi », a déclaré Hubbard.edging all the hard work I’ve put in,” Hubbard said.

Le diplômé de l’école Bev Facey et ancien membre des équipes de Football Alberta a été le meneur de la FBS pour les verges au sol (2094), ainsi que pour la moyenne de verges par match (161,1), les matchs de 200 verges et les verges totales par match. Hubbard a été un choix unanime pour faire partie de l’équipe d’étoiles nationale universitaire américaine, tandis qu’il a été proclamé joueur offensif de l’année de l’Association Big 12, finaliste pour le prix du joueur de l’année Walter Camp et un des trois finalistes nationaux pour le prix Doak Walker, décerné au meilleur porteur de ballon aux États-Unis. Hubbard a terminé huitième au scrutin pour le trophée Heisman, le troisième meilleur résultat obtenu par un Canadien.

Hubbard a terminé à égalité au troisième rang dans la FBS et premier chez tous les joueurs des associations du Power Five pour les touchés au sol. Il a été le meneur de l’Association Big 12 autant au chapitre des points marqués que du total de touchés. Il a été le seul joueur de l’Association Big 12 à maintenir une moyenne de plus de 100 verges au sol par match, ses 161,1 verges par rencontre dépassant ses plus proches concurrents de 64,6 verges par match et plus. Son total de 2094 verges au sol à l’issue de la saison lui donne le 16e rang dans l’histoire de la FBS et le troisième dans l’histoire de l’Association Big 12. Il a dépassé le cap des 100 verges à chacun de ses 11 derniers matchs, ce qui s’avère la plus longue séquence active du genre au pays. Ses 2094 verges au sol constituent le deuxième total en une saison dans l’histoire d’Oklahoma State, le seul joueur ayant mieux fait à ce titre étant Barry Sanders, qui a réalisé l’exploit en 1988, l’année où il a remporté le trophée Heisman.

« Je crois que c’est le rêve de tout le monde qui joue au football au Canada d’aller dans la NCAA et d’y jouer au football ou dans un autre sport. Ça montre à quel point les Canadiens sont tout aussi talentueux, qu’ils travaillent tout aussi fort », a dit Hubbard en faisant allusion aux autres finalistes qui étaient en lice pour le trophée Cornish.

« Nathan (Rourke), Neville (Gallimore), tous ces gars-là sont très talentueux, ils travaillent tellement fort, c’est fou. Claypool est un joueur d’impact, le plus utile à son équipe. Le simple fait de voir ce que ces gars-là ont réussi à titre de représentants du Canada, c’est formidable », a affirmé Hubbard.
Le coéquipier de Hubbard, le secondeur de troisième année Amen Ogbongbemiga, qui est issu du programme d’école secondaire du Pride de Notre Dame à Calgary, était lui aussi finaliste.

Selon Hubbard, le fait d’avoir joué tout son football à Bev Facey au deuxième cycle du secondaire lui a permis de profiter d’un milieu stable, et sa famille aussi. « J’avais souvent déménagé dans mon enfance, je n’étais jamais resté très longtemps au même endroit. En arrivant à Sherwood Park, je ne pensais pas que j’allais rester jusqu’à la fin de l’école secondaire. Cependant, j’ai tissé des liens, j’aimais beaucoup mon équipe de football, j’y ai fait beaucoup de bons amis. J’estimais que si j’étais assez bon, (les universités) allaient finir par me remarquer. J’ai eu la chance de faire partie d’une très bonne équipe qui comptait plusieurs bons joueurs et nous avons attiré l’attention. J’ai forcé bien des gens à reconnaître mon potentiel, à remarquer ma vidéo et c’est parti de là », a-t-il indiqué.

Hubbard s’est engagé à retourner à Stillwater en vue de sa troisième année en 2020. Toutefois comme pour le reste du monde du football, il ne sait pas de quoi aura l’air la prochaine saison en raison de la pandémie du coronavirus.

« C’est ce qui est le plus difficile pour tout le monde en ce moment. À quel moment ça va commencer ? Ce serait bien d’avoir des dates fermes, mais il s’agit tout simplement de rester prêt. »

Le trophée Cornish a été décerné au cours d’une cérémonie qui a été webdiffusée en direct. On avait d’abord prévu présenter le prix à Hubbard avant le match d’entraînement printanier d’Oklahoma State du 18 avril à Stillwater. Les organisateurs ont promis de lui amener le trophée afin qu’il puisse en signer l’endos, comme l’a fait le double lauréat Nathan Rourke, de l’Université de l’Ohio, en 2018 et 2019.  

Le gagnant du trophée Cornish a été sélectionné par 20 journalistes, membres du secteur du personnel des joueurs de la LCF et d’autres experts à l’occasion d’un scrutin de deux tours qui a été tenu à la fin de la saison des matchs de bowl. Le trophée est exposé au Temple de la renommée du football canadien à Hamilton, en Ontario.
