Gymnastics Canada  – AALSMEER, NED (March 18, 2017) – Canada was well represented today in trampoline gymnastics at the 2017 Flower Cup in the Netherlands, winning a gold medal in the junior men’s event and a silver medal in senior women’s.

Jérémy Chartier from Montreal, QC won the junior competition in impressive fashion, outscoring silver medalist Robert Vilarasau of Spain by more than three points in the final. Chartier’s score of 57.900, not only won him the junior gold medal; it was also one point better than the senior men’s gold medal champion. 

“We perfectly managed the training week, I cannot ask for more,” said Chartier, who is no stranger to the competition, winning in the same category at the last Flower Cup in 2015. “I had a lot of up and downs in the past week, but I’m really satisfied of my performances especially because I’m currently dealing with a foot injury. I know it’s not a stress fracture but when I’m back home we need to investigate further because I still feel some pain.”

In senior women’s competition, Rachel Tam from Toronto, ON earned the silver medal with a total of 51.575 points finishing behind Sviatlana Makshtarova of Azerbaijan. Tam also competed in the 2015 Flower Cup, finishing third in the junior competition. “Overall I was impressed with my results and what I could do because of my back injury,” said Tam, who has only recently returned to training full time since having back issues early on in the year. “I know I could have done better but based on the situation I think I did the best I could.”

Most of the finalists in the women’s event had some difficulties with travel and had to make some changes and adjust their routines. Sophiane Méthot of La Prairie, QC who led competition after preliminaries, managed to complete her routine in the finals despite some difficulties and finished fourth overall. “I’m happy with my preliminaries, but a bit disappointed in my final,” she said following competition. “I really fought hard to finish my routine and I’m proud of that.  I was coming here to make a final because I knew it was possible.  After the preliminaries I was aiming for the podium, it was my goal”.

Sarah Milette from Longueuil, QC had a difficult day and finished 26th overall in the senior category.

“We saw good things during this competition,” said Stéphan Duchesne, High performance director of trampoline gymnastics at Gymnastics Canada. “Jérémy’s outstanding scores for a junior, the preliminary and optional scores from Sophiane, the high difficulty level from Rachel and Sophiane, combined with the performance on demand resulting in medals for Jérémy and Rachel.  All these athletes are still young and will face some challenges down the road, it’s part of the learning process and the road to success”
