Canadian Lacrosse Association  – OTTAWA, ON (August 28, 2016) – The scorekeepers were much busier on night two of the 2016 Minto Cup championship series, as the Orangeville Northmen defeated the Coquitlam Adanacs by a score of 9-6 to tie up the best-of-five series at 1-1.

The teams combined for 15 goals in game two, easily surpassing the record setting low of five that were scored during the Coquitlam’s 3-2 win in yesterday’s finals opener.

A six point performance from Adam Charalambides (3 G, 3 A), who now has a comfortable seven point cushion atop the tournament scoring leader board, led the way for the Northmen, who were able to capitalized on their offensive chances and sneak some shots past an excellent Coquitlam goaltender.

“He was good and he’s been good all season long, through the regular season and playoffs, and he was good tonight,” Northmen head coach DJ Clevely said of Charalambides. “But we had other guys step up. We’re a solid team I think and we don’t go as one guy goes.”

Orangeville’s Matt Van Galen, who entered the lineup after not playing in game one, fired an impressive 15 shots on goal, two of which found the back of the net. His strong performance earned him Player of the Game honours.

Another difference maker for the Northmen was Chris Willman, who won 14 of 19 face-offs and helped his team keep momentum on their side after each goal.

“We’re and eight-man unit up there and that’s kind of what happened the other night in that 3-2 game, we just didn’t play like that so it was nice to see tonight,” added Clevely.

The Adanacs, meanwhile, had two goals apiece from John Hofseth and Dennon Armstrong.

After exchanging goals to open the game, Coquitlam’s Jordan Magnuson scored on a beautiful individual effort, running the length of the floor and launching a shot without breaking stride, all while evading swinging stick checks from a chasing defender.

Not to be outdone, the Northmen scored a memorable goal of their own to end the frame, as Charalambides alertly kicked a loose ball to teammate Joel Tinney while fighting off a double team from the defense. The ball was then cycled across the floor to Thomas Hoggarth, who fired a heavy shot from the outside past the keeper.

Lucas Ducharme gave Orangeville their first lead of the championship series at the 7:01 mark of the second period and they never looked back, pressuring Coquitlam to make bad passes and settle for low quality shots.

“They’re a good team and they’re gonna make us pay for mistakes that we make,” said Adanacs assistant coach Creighton Reid. “They came out ready to play and won a lot of loose ball battles that that we were winning in the defensive end last night. That’s something we’re going to have to clean up.”

The local fans in attendance were treated to a pair of highlight reel plays from the Adanacs in the third period. Colin Munro scored a beautiful behind the back goal while tip toeing the crease, while goaltender Christian Del Bianco tuned away Charalambides on a penalty shot which was awarded after a defender covered the ball with his hand in the crease.

“This series is gonna be a real tough one and its obviously gonna go the distance,” remarked Clevely. “I’m looking forward to being part of it.”

The best-of-five championship series continues on Saturday, August 27 at 8:00PM PST at the Langley Events Centre.
