July 5, 2016 – In celebration of the one-month countdown to the Opening Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, CBC/Radio-Canada has officially launched its Rio 2016-focused websites, cbc.ca/olympics, ICI.Radio-Canada.ca/jeuxolympiques and cbc.ca/kidscbcolympics. As part of the national public broadcaster’s commitment to make Rio 2016 the most digitally-accessible Games experience in Canadian history, the main online hubs for CBC/Radio-Canada’s coverage of Rio 2016 at cbc.ca/olympics and ICI.Radio-Canada.ca/jeuxolympiques offer everything Canadians need to watch and enjoy the Games online, including live-streaming video, event and broadcast schedules and much more. The kid-focused and family-friendly cbc.ca/kidscbcolympics offers content tailored for children to help them learn about, understand and be inspired by sports.
Leading up to and throughout CBC/Radio-Canada’s coverage of Rio 2016, cbc.ca/olympics and ICI.Radio-Canada.ca/jeuxolympiques will serve as Canada’s best resources for where, when and how to enjoy the Olympic Games. The sites include TV and online broadcast schedules, competition schedules and results, a live medal table, audio and video features including live-streaming feeds, on-demand video and podcasts, the latest on Team Canada and a spotlight page featuring extended Olympic Games-related content. These responsive sites adapt to the device on which they are being used, ensuring optimal performance on desktop computers, smartphones and tablets.
The broadcast schedules within cbc.ca/olympics and ICI.Radio-Canada.ca/jeuxolympiques will list coverage across CBC-TV, ICI Radio-Canada Télé, primary partners TSN and RDS, as well as Sportsnet, and will automatically adapt to the user’s time zone in Canada. In addition to TV schedules, the sites will feature up to 23 individual live-streaming feeds each day, giving Canadians the option to watch the TV broadcasts online or choose any of the simultaneous live-event feeds available at any given time.
The child-focused cbc.ca/kidscbcolympics offers inspiration for Canadian kids to be active in athletics and to develop a love of sports in a non-competitive way that will last throughout their lives. The overall theme of the site is “What It Takes,” which is showcased in athlete profiles which include inspirational quotes from the athletes themselves. Although the site is meant for the entire family — parents are encouraged to visit the site with their kids to learn about the Olympic Games together — it is written with kids in mind, using their language and their reading level for ease of understanding.
The Kids’ CBC site showcases a variety of standout Canadian athletes in different sports, fun facts about the Olympic Games, videos, games, activities, infographics and other fun and informative blog posts. Games featured on the site will help introduce children to Olympic Games sports including archery, diving, power lift, equestrian and three different soccer games, among others. Other activities include Olympic Games mascot colouring pages, word scrambles and a sports matchup game for younger kids. In addition, visitors can do quizzes, craft activities, crossword puzzles and much more.
CBC/Radio-Canada’s coverage of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games officially begins with the Opening Ceremony on Friday, August 5 with a half-hour pre-show at 6:30 p.m. ET (3:30 p.m. PT) followed by the Ceremony itself at 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. PT).
