Canadians strike gold at international diving competition
Diving – DRESDEN, Germany – Victor Povzner of Maple, Ont., and Henry McKay of Ottawa executed a risky dive in the last round and it paid off in gold as they won the men’s three-metre synchro on Saturday at the Dresden International diving competition.
Povzner and McKay, competing for the fourth time together, tabulated 292.56 points. Reo Nishida and Kazuma Idobata of Japan was second at 290.88 and Aleksei Sorokin and Grigory Ivanov of Russia third at 278.07.
‘’I was looking at the scores and I knew it was close going into the last round,’’ said Povzner. ‘’Our last twisting dive was the one that got us the title because it had such a high degree of difficulty. We took a risk and did it pretty nicely.’’
Povzner, 16, trains at Optimal Diving in Markham, Ont. and McKay, 18, at the Toronto Diving Academy. They try to practice together at least once a week.
‘’It clicks with us and we enjoy working together,’’ said Povzner. “It felt like going in today we didn’t have enough practice time but it turned out be all right. I was really happy with the result and the performance.’’
It was the second medal of the competition for Povzner. He earned bronze on one-metre Friday.
Cedric Fofana of Quebec City was 11th in the boys 14-15 age group platform.
Competition ends Sunday.
