Swimming Canada – INDIANAPOLIS – Taylor Ruck of Swimming Canada’s High Performance Centre – Ontario notched first and third place finishes on Friday at the Pro Swim event.

The 17-year-old Ruck took top spot in the 200-m backstroke in two minutes and 08.11 seconds. Asia Seidt of the U.S. was second in 2:10.00 and her compatriot Erin Voss third in 2:11.05. Kennedy Goss of Toronto was seventh in 2:12.90.

Just prior to that victory, Ruck also was third in the 50-m freestyle in 24.76. Simone Manuel and Margo Geer of the U.S. were 1-2 in 24.59 and 24.72. Kayla Sanchez of HPC-Ontario was fifth in 25.33.

Ruck won a record tying eight medals at the Commonwealth Games last month in Australia and so far she has three-top-three finishes at her first competition since the Games.

Rebecca Smith of HPC-Ontario was seventh in the women’s 200-m freestyle.

Competition ends Saturday.

Guest impresses at Atlanta Classic Swim Meet

James Guest of Pointe-Claire, Que., earned second and third place finishes on Friday to open the Atlanta Classic Swim Meet. Canadians won five medals.

Guest was second in the men’s 400-m individual medley in 4:27.54. The winner was Mark Szaranek of Britain in 4:24.11. Zach Brown of the U.S. was third in 4:31.91.

In the men’s 100-m breaststroke, American Michael Andrew clocked a meet record 59.98. Miguel DeLara of Mexico was second in 1:01.99 and the 22-year-old Guest followed in 1:02.97.

There were two Canadian medallists in the women’s 100-m butterfly won by Erika Brown of the U.S. in 1:00.13. Haley Black of Prince George, B.C. was second in 1:00.51 and quadruple Olympic Games medallist Penny Oleksiak of Toronto took third spot 1:00.92.
Canada’s fifth medal was earned by Javier Acevedo of Ajax, Ont., in the men’s 200-m freestyle in 1:50.76. The U.S. was 1-2 with Jake Magahey the victor in 1:49.65 and Maxime Rooner second in 1:49.80.

Competition continues through to Sunday.
