Volleyball Canada – OCHO RIOS, Jamaica, June 25, 2017 – Canadians Jamie Broder (Victoria, BC) and Sophie Bukovec (Toronto,ON) concluded a perfect weekend by dominating the Cuban team of Lianma Flores and Yanisleidis Sanchez 2-0 (21-18, 21-7) for the gold medal at the Ocho Rios Beach Volleyball Tournament, the third stop of NORCECA Circuit.
 
“This is our first tournament together as a team and I’m really proud of the level we played at all weekend,” said Broder, a 2016 Olympian with former partner Kristina May (Valjas). “We kept a great balance of focus and fun, while making small adjustments to our game throughout. We are looking forward to our next opportunity to represent Canada!”

The North Americans advanced to the final after a victory over fellow Canadians Helen Rancourt and Sarah Meunier-Bedard 2-0 (21-19, 21-17) in one of the semifinals after going undefeated through Pool B and winning five matches in total.
 
Lianma and Yanisleidis advanced to the title’s match after defeating Karissa Cook/ Katherine Spieler (USA-A) 2-0 (21-12, 21-14) in the semis.
 
Cook and Spieler claimed the bronze medal by defeating Rancourt and Meunier-Bedard 2-0 (21-18, 21-13).
 
On the men’s side, Aaron Nusbaum and Josh Binstock of Canada-A won the bronze medal; and Liam Kopp/Sergiy Grabovsky, also of Canada, were sixth. Binstock is a two-time Olympian who is officially retired, but plans to play in the Maccabiah Games this summer with Nusbaum.
