Two-time Canadian Olympian Marie-Ève Beauchemin-Nadeau headlines the roster. Beauchemin-Nadeau, who finished eighth in Rio this summer in the 69 Kg division, will be competing in her third world university championship and fifth FISU event overall – including two universiades – after capturing gold at the 2014 event.
Joining Beauchemin-Nadeau are two additional returning athletes from the 2014 roster, including UQAM’s Mikael Gonsalves, who also attended the 2013 FISU Games, along with Montreal’s Kristel Ngarlem.
Craig Walker, Canada’s team leader at the 2015 Pan American Games, will serve the same role at the 2016 world university championship. Guy Marineau, Yvan Darsigny, Melvin Michael Read and Guy Greavette complete the Canadian coaching staff.
“We’re excited about this team,” said Walker. “We have good mix of very experienced lifters who have competed internationally at the highest levels, and some lifters who a poised for breakthrough performances. The anchor of this team is Marie-Eve Beauchemin-Nadeau – She has achieved a high level of success on the platform and in the classroom, and her focus and poise at every stage of competition set a great example for other team members.”
