Team Canada will be led by siblings Taryn and Cole Grant (Winnipeg, Man.) along with Jonah Shaffer (Ottawa, Ont.). Taryn Grant and Shaffer are members of the national team and Cole Grant will compete while also serving as team leader. Brody Newton (Sackville, N.S.), Janice Stevens (Iroquois, Ont.) and Brett Walker (Saskatoon, Sask.) complete the roster.

Both Grants, along with Newton and Shaffer all attend University of Louisiana at Lafayette, while Stevens studies at University of Louisiana at Monroe. Walker attends Florida Southern University.

Taryn Grant, 20, is coming off a gold medal last summer at the 2015 World Under-21 Championship.

Canada won two medals at the 2012 world university championship, as Alex Paradis captured gold and Kevin Melnuk earned silver in the jump competition. Melnuk also reached the podium twice at the 2008 event.

“This is the first world university waterski championship for the entire team and everyone is proud and excited to be representing Canada. We expect to have a strong team overall showing and are hopeful for a few individual podiums along the way,” said Cole Grant.

“Having the opportunity to represent Canada alongside my sister Taryn is very special. This will only be the second time that we have been on a national team together. The entire six-person team knows each other very well, which will make for a fun week in Japan being ambassadors for Canada.”
