Ringette Canada – London, Ontario – April 4, 2016 – Canada’s top ringette athletes took to the ice in London today as the 2016 Canadian ringette championships got underway. Forty-eight teams from across the country are competing for national titles in the U16 and U19 divisions, as well as the National Ringette League championship title.
 
In the U16 division, seven of the 20 teams came out of the first day of competition undefeated. Manitoba downed British Columbia 7-3 and London 10-7. Calgary Blue beat New Brunswick 6-2 and Central Alberta Sting 5-3. Ontario downed Nova Scotia 8-1 and also beat Gloucester-Cumberland 8-1. Quebec beat Elora-Fergus 6-5 in overtime and downed New Brunswick 6-3. BVRA Angels (MB) beat Clarence-Rockland 3-2 and downed Alberta 4-1. Mississauga beat Saskatchewan 8-7 and Clarence-Rockland 6-2. Rive Sud (QC) downed Gloucester-Cumberland 5-1 and St. Albert Mission 10-5. Oakbank’s Milica Oravec, Mississauga’s Emily Power and Steinbach’s Belle Paisley led the opening day scoring in the U16 division with nine points each.
 
In the U19 division, three out of 20 teams are undefeated after the first day of play. Calgary Blue downed Nova Scotia 3-2 and St. Albert Mission 5-2. Manitoba beat Cambridge Turbos 4-2 and Edmonton Elite 5-4. Ontario downed Mississauga 8-1 and beat British Columbia 6-2. Lacombe’s Gillian Dreger and St. Jacob’s Maddie MacLean led the opening day scoring in the U19 division with seven points each.
 
In the National Ringette League (NRL) division, the Gloucester Devils beat Edmonton WAM! 5-4 and Montreal Mission beat Edmonton Black Gold Rush 6-4. Calgary RATH downed Atlantic Attack 4-2 and Cambridge Turbos downed Ottawa Ice 7-4.
 
Games are taking place at the Western Fair Sports Centre and Nichols Recreation Centre. The finals will be held at Western Fair. Competition continues all week and finals in all three divisions take place on Saturday, April 9^th (U19 at 10:00, U16 at 13:30 and NRL at 14:30). All-stars and the NRL Annual Awards will be announced at the closing award ceremony on Saturday night.

Ringette is a Canadian sport that was invented in 1963 in North Bay, Ontario by the late Sam Jacks. There are currently over 30,000 players on nearly 2,000 teams across Canada, with over 1,500 officials and nearly 8000 coaches. Internationally, it is played in more than a half a dozen other countries around the world. Ringette has been designated a Heritage Sport by Sport Canada and as part of the Sport for Life movement, ringette is well advanced at adapting Sport Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development model.
