Canadian Paralympic Committee – Sept. 14, 2016 – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Tristen Chernove of Powell River, B.C., won the gold medal Wednesday morning in the men’s road cycling C2 time trial to lead Canadian riders to three medals so far on Wednesday at the Paralympic Games.

”Time trial is never easy – if you’re doing it right, it hurts,” said Chernove. ”There was quite a strong headwind. Wind means pushing harder, it can be mentally discouraging to see your speed start to drop even though you’re putting out a lot of wattage. I just tried to grind through it and I’m just delighted.”

Ross Wilson of Sherwood Park, Alta., added a silver in the men’s C1 time trial and Charles Moreau of Victoriaville, Que., took bronze in the men’s H3 time trial. More Canadian riders are scheduled in their time trials later today.

In the pool, Katarina Roxon of Kippens, N.L. qualified first for tonight’s final in the SB8 100-m breaststroke. Joining her tonight for second swims are Jonathan Dieleman of Smithers, B.C., in the men’s SB3 50-m breaststroke and Nicolas Guy-Turbide of Quebec City in the men’s S13 50-m freestyle.

Para-canoe made its Games debut Wednesday and both Canadian entries are headed to finals. Christine Gauthier of Dorval, Que., was fifth in her heats then won the semifinal in the KL2 while Erica Scarff of Mississauga, Ont., was fifth in

her heats and third in semis. The finals are Thursday morning.

In athletics, Brent Lakatos of Dorval won his heat to advance to the final in the men’s T53 800-m. Lakatos has a gold and silver so far at the Games. The final is on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Canada defeated Algeria 70-51 to finish 11th in men’s wheelchair basketball. Nik Goncin of Regina scored 19 points for the victors.
