Gymnastics Canada  – MONTREAL, QC (March 11, 2017) – Canada’s junior gymnasts took centre stage on day two of the 2017 International Gymnix in Montreal today competing in apparatus qualifiers as well as the team event.

Three Canadian teams battled against teams from the United States, Italy, Russia and Japan to see who would take home the all-around team and individual titles. Team Canada included members of the national team and Team Canada East and Canada West comprised of aspiring junior team members.

Team Canada, including Ana Padurariu (Oshawa, ON), Lucia Jakab (Kelowna, BC), Victoria Jurca (Chateauguay, QC) and Zoé Allaire-Bourgie (Montreal, QC), finished just off the podium in the all-around team competition in fourth place scoring 153.804.

Team Canada East, Éloise Monat (Sabrevois, QC), Jillian Langille (Windsor Junction, NS), Megan DiPietro (Cambridge, ON) and Myrelle Morin (Ile Bizard, QC) and Team Canada West, Charlotte Innes (Calgary, AB), Elizabeth Holmstrom (Edmonton, AB), Imogen Paterson (Vancouver, BC) and Quinn Skrupa (Brandon, MB) finished sixth and seventh respectively.

“It was a strong field today. The Americans were excellent and the Italians were great,” said Dave Brubaker, National team director for women’s artistic gymnastics at Gymnastics Canada. “We’re disappointed with our performance today but we gave twelve athletes the opportunity to gain experience. Many of these girls are competing at this level for the first time. This is typical of the first year in an Olympic cycle and we know the confidence and results will follow.”

Padurariu was Canada’s top performer, finishing third on the uneven bars with a score of 14.134. Padurariu also finished in fourth place on the floor just .200 points behind a first place tie.

Junior and Senior athletes not competing in the International Gymnix competition took part in the Gymnix Challenge. In the Gymnix Challenge, athletes compete individually and represent their club. Laurie-Lou Vézina from Gym-Fly club finished in fourth in the all-around competition. All apparatus finals will take place on Sunday.

All apparatus finals for both junior and senior athletes will take place tomorrow morning beginning at 11:15 am.
