Racquetball Canada – Winnipeg, May 15, 2018 – Over one hundred athletes from ten provinces will be competing at the Racquetball Canada Canadian Championships being held at the University of Winnipeg Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg. The tournament begins on May 20 and runs until May 26 and is being hosted by the Racquetball Manitoba.
The Canadian Championships are the ultimate competition of the racquetball season in Canada.  All of the country’s top athletes will be competing in the tournament including several athletes who have been on the podium for Canada at the international level and in pro-circuit competition.
Canada’s high performance athletes compete in Men’s and Women’s Open Singles and Doubles divisions. As well, many of Canada’s national development team athletes and top junior athletes play in the Open and Elite divisions.
In addition to competing for national titles, athletes are vying for spots on teams that will represent Canada at the upcoming World Championships and international competitions in the 2018/2019 season. The event is also part of the selection process for nominating athletes for Sport Canada funding and for determining national teams.
The tournament also includes several age and skill divisions to provide an excellent national competitive opportunity for both seasoned an novice players. Participants this year range from 16 years of age to over 80.
“Racquetball Manitoba is excited to host the 2018 Canadian Racquetball Championships in Winnipeg,” said Jennifer Saunders, Racquetball Manitoba’s Executive Director. “Our staff and volunteers are hard at work to ensure this is a premier event for participants from across the country. We are especially proud to have such a strong Manitoba contingent taking their shot at National titles in the various skill and age categories. We look forward to welcoming players, coaches and families to the Winnipeg WhiteOut for a week of racquetball competition and camaraderie.”
The Racquetball Canada Awards Banquet will be held at the Winnipeg Art Gallery on May 26. Mike Ceresia (Burlington, ON), Christie Huczek (Bozeman, MT), Josée Grand’Maître (Longueuil, QC) Gary Ness (Wolfville, NS) and Calvin Smith (Coquitlam, BC) will be inducted into the Racquetball Canada Hall of Fame. As well, Racquetball Canada will recognize the winners of the Open Events at 2018 Canadian Championships and the recipients of several Racquetball Canada awards.
The tournament is open to the public at no cost. Media is welcome to attend the event.
In partnership with the International Racquetball Federation, Racquetball Canada will be offering live-streaming throughout the tournament.
