Judo Canada – Montreal, November 14, 2017 – Judo Canada is proud to announce that the 2018 Elite National Championships invitational tournament will be held on January 13 and 14, 2018 at the TOHU in Montreal. The competition will bring together the top eight male and female judokas in each category, from nine provinces and territories, for a total of almost 200 athletes.

They will battle it out at the TOHU, which is regarded as one of the finest circus venues in the world. The circular hall will provide spectators with a unique perspective as they watch Canada’s top judokas in action.

“We’re pleased to be able to collaborate with the TOHU for this event,” affirmed Nicolas Gill, Chief Executive Officer and High Performance Director of Judo Canada.

“It’s our hope that people will come not only to watch the competitions, but also to experience this one-of-a-kind venue. The combination of elements will provide spectators with an entirely new judo experience.”

A total of 400 free tickets will be made available to the general public on each day of competition.

“We are thrilled to present and support this event,” stated Nancy Cormier, Director of Operations and Promotional Events for the TOHU, adding that in the past, the venue has been used for other sporting events such as boxing matches and martial arts tournaments.

“The TOHU is well-known throughout the world and is the only circular venue in North America. Its size and adaptability make it an ideal location for hosting events and audiences of all types. It’s the perfect venue for this competition.”

In addition to the national titles that will be up for grabs, athletes competing in Under-18 age categories will vie for a total of $5,000 in bursaries, which will be awarded to the five top clubs as follows:

1st place: $2,000
2nd place: $1,250
3rd place: $750
4th place: $500
5th place: $500

To complement the event, the Institut national du sport du Québec will host a training camp from January 8 to 19 and a coaches’ conference on January 12.
