Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame Launches New Online Exhibit for Canada’s 150th Anniversary of Confederation

Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame​ – December 22, 2017 – Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame is launching a new online exhibit titled Canadian History and Society: Through the Lens of Sport highlighting the rich history of Canadian sport dating back to 1867. Designed as an interactive tool for students and educators, this is the first time that 150 years of Canadian sport history has been presented in this manner, and the content is available to Canadians of all ages. This project is funded in part by the Virtual Museum of Canada with over 800 digital assets donated from eight major museums across Canada to make this online experience possible. 14 mini-documentaries as well as 16 webisodes were also created for this online exhibit. The mini-documentaries are approximately five minutes each and narrated by Canadian sporting greats including Donovan Bailey, Cassie Campbell-Pascall, Michael Edgson, Sharon Anne Firth, Danielle Goyette, Angela James, Catriona Le May Doan, Pierre Lueders, George Reed, and Kyle Shewfelt. The webisodes are 2-4 minutes in length and showcase one artefact from each decade beginning with the 1860s through to the present day. The online exhibit is available to view at http://www.canadasports150.ca. 

 

Five themes are highlighted throughout this online exhibit including; Major Sporting Events – The British Empire Games first held in Hamilton, Ontario in 1930, Canada Games, Olympic and Paralympic Games, Pan American Games, the Brier, Arctic Winter Games, Grey Cup, Stanley Cup, Special Olympics; Military and Sport – featuring the St. Hyacinthe-Donnacona Navy team made up of Navy sailors who won the 1944 Grey Cup and sport veterans who made a significant impact on sport such as Conn Smythe, Percy Molson, Daryl K. Seaman and Benjamin Keeper; Women in Sport – when women started to compete in international competitions featuring the Edmonton Grads, equality for women in sport featuring Abby Hoffman, and influential women including Lucile Wheeler, Anne Heggtveit, Nancy Greene and Kerrin Lee-Gartner who influenced each other’s careers and created a Canadian legacy; Cultural Diversity – featuring Tom Longboat, Phil Edwards, Ellen Burka and Hans Fogh; and Canadian innovation in Sport – explore the five sports known to have been invented in Canada including basketball, lacrosse, five pin bowling, ringette and wheelchair rugby.
 
The wealth of content compiled from the research to produce the online exhibit also resulted in the creation of two travelling exhibits. Play Hard, Fight Hard: Sport and the Canadian Military that was on display at The Military Museums in Calgary in 2016 and is currently open at Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame through March 2018; The Canada Games travelling exhibit that visited 21 past Canada Games host communities during the Flag Relay and Community Celebrations leading up to the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg.
 
The partners of the project include the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, Canada Games Council, Canadian Curling Association, CBC Sports, Historica Canada, Northern Life Museum and Cultural Centre, Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame, Skate Canada Sports Hall of Fame, and The Military Museums.
