Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame​ – Toronto, November 9, 2017 – Tonight, the Class of 2017 inductees will receive our nation’s highest sporting honour – induction into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. The Class of 2017 represents Canada’s greatest Indigenous, Olympic, Paralympic and national sport heroes. Over thirty of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame’s Honoured Members from across North America will be in attendance at tonight’s gala including Kurt Browning, Craig Forrest, Elizabeth Manley, Marnie McBean, Steve Podborski, and Ken Read.

 
The Class of 2017 includes six athletes, two sport builders, and one team who have each contributed a tremendous amount to their sport, communities, and to our country. Their perseverance and success inspire us to be better in sport and in life. The inductees include:
  • Carol Huynh, two-time Olympic medallist in wrestling who has given back by coaching the next generation, Wrestling
  • Cindy Klassen, the most decorated Canadian Winter Olympian in history, and a role model to young women in sport around the world, Speed Skating
  • The late Gaylord Powless, one of Canada’s most outstanding lacrosse players, overcoming racism and building bridges to Indigenous communities, Lacrosse
  • Lanny McDonald, Stanley Cup champion, and inspiring community leader, Ice Hockey
  • Mike Weir, the only Canadian to win the Masters, who has dedicated himself to supporting children in need, Golf
  • Simon Whitfield, two-time Olympic medallist and role model for youth across Canada, Triathlon
  • Dr. Charles Tator, a scientist and neurosurgeon, having a profound impact on spinal cord injury research and transforming the world’s understanding of concussions, Builder
  • The late Dr. Robert W. Jackson, the founder of the Paralympic movement in Canada and global leader in the advancement of arthroscopic surgery, Builder
  • The Edmonton Grads, the best basketball team the world has ever seen, Basketball
At this morning’s media conference, the inductees each received a Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame Honoured Member jacket, the official symbol of achieving Canada’s highest sporting honour. The legacies of the Class of 2017 will live on for generations to come at Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.
