Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame – Calgary, September 13, 2016 – In recognition of the 36th annual Terry Fox Run taking place this Sunday, Septemer 18 across the country, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, located at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, is proud to unveil a new Terry Fox exhibit that will be open to the public until December 31, 2016. On-hand to launch Terry Fox: Running to the Heart of Canada were Darrell Fox, Terry’s brother who drove alongside Terry during the Marathon of Hope, Catriona Le May Doan, Honoured Member of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and 2-time Olympic Gold Medallist who was personally inspired by Terry, and Mark O’Neill, President and CEO of the Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa. 150 Grade three and four students from Colonel Fred J Scott School also participated in the event. Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame’s mission is to share the stories of the country’s greatest sport heroes to inspire Canadians to be the best they can be in sport, school, work and life. Terry Fox is an outstanding example of one of Canada’s greatest heroes who accomplished so much in his short lifetime. To-date, $700 million dollars has been raised in Terry Fox’s name.

“Terry received the highest sporting honour in the country when he was posthumously inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1981. To this day, his strength and courage continue to inspire Canadians and people around the world. We are thrilled to open this new exhibit at Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame to share Terry Fox’s story with the public,” said Mario Siciliano, President and CEO of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.

The new exhibit at Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame tells Terry’s story from before the Marathon of Hope, his life on the road, his triumphs and struggles and what kind of impact he and his foundation have made over the years. Artefacts on display include a Wayne Gretzky jersey given to Terry by Gretzky himself before he started the Marathon of Hope, a replica prosthetic leg similar to the one Terry used, and a pair of Terry’s iconic running shoes signed by dozens of Olympians and Honoured Members of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.   

 

Darrell Fox, Terry Fox’s brother, joined by Grades 3 & 4 students and teachers from the Colonel J. Fred Scott School with a one-of-a-kind replica of Terry Fox’s head from Thunder Bay, Ontario monument.
