Canada’s domination of Chile not enough to advance at Pan Am Cup
Volleyball Canada – LIMA, Peru, June 21, 2017 – Canada overpowered Chile 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-9) to finish with a 3-2 record and 14 points in Pool B of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum on Wednesday evening.
However, the big difference in the score was not enough to grant Canada the final spot in the quarterfinals. Both Canada and Cuba finished with identical win-loss records, but Cuba’s better balance in points scored and allowed (1.075 to 1.055) means the Caribbean nation advances.
Michaela Reesor (Caledon, Ontario) and Shainah Joseph (Ottawa) each registered 14 points as top scorers for Canada in the match against Chile; followed by Alissa Coulter with 12. Catalina Melo was the main offensive player for the losing side with 11 points.
Canada out blocked Chile 9-1 with Marisa Field (Kelowna, BC) and Lucille Charuk (Vancouver) accounting for four apiece. The winners held a 44-22 advantage in attacks.
Canada moves on to the classification round and meets Venezuela on June 23.
