Canada’s Cedric Fofana Wins Bronze Medal at World Juniors
Diving Plongeon Canada – KIEV, Ukraine – Cedric Fofana of Quebec City earned Canada’s second medal this week at the FINA World Junior Diving Championships with the bronze on Friday in the men’s three-metre springboard.
China finished 1-2 in the 14-15 age group event. Daoyi Long was first with 474.90 points and Zelin Yao second at 464.60. Fofana followed in third at 459.05.
‘’I’m very satisfied,’’ said Fofana, who reached finals on all three boards. He was 12th on one-metre and ninth on platform as well this week. ‘’The three-metre was my last event of the competition and I really wanted to show what I’ve been working on in my training.’’
Fofana was in contention for the gold medal heading into his fourth and last dive in the final but averaged 4.5’s from the judges for his reverse three and half.
‘’I’m a bit disappointed about the last dive,’’ he admitted. ‘’I knew that I had a chance to least get silver. I try to not look at the scores but I saw them through a reflection and I knew I needed a big dive to finish higher.’’
On women’s 16-18 platform, China grabbed the top two positions with Rui Zhang taking gold at 488.70 and Shan Lin the silver at 453.20. Iana Satina of Russia was third at 425.90.
Mélodie Leclerc of Montreal was 11th in the final. Margo Erlam of Calgary was 14th in the preliminaries and missed a berth in the final by less than three points.
Leclerc was not originally suppose to compete on the platform but an injury to teammate Olivia Chamandy in training here last week created an opening.
‘’I had to change my training plans this week and put the focus on tower,’’ she said. ‘’To go in and make the final and earned spot for Canada for the Youth Olympics is beyond my expectations.’’
Erlam was also pleased with her performance.
‘’I certainly improved over my three-metre performance,’’ she said. ‘’I scored higher than usual for my compulsories which I’m really happy about and I came through strong with my reverse.’’
Competition runs through to Sunday.
