Softball Canada​ – Santo Domingo, D.R – After seeing both of its games washed out on Saturday, Team Canada won both ends of a doubleheader on Sunday by defeating Guatemala 4-0 and Mexico 4-3 at the IX Pan American Women’s Softball Championship. Karissa Hovinga (Edmonton, Alta.) fired a no-hitter in the first game, while Jenna Caira (Toronto, Ont.) held Mexico hitless through five innings before Canada hung on for the win.
 
Against Guatemala, Canada got on the board first when Joey Lye (Toronto, Ont.) singled to center, stole second and scored on a triple to left by Erika Polidori (Brantford, Ont.). Jenn Salling (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) followed with a double to center to give Canada an early 2-0 lead. After both teams were retired in order in the second, Canada loaded the bases in the third on singles by Lye and Polidori and a walk by Salling before Victoria Hayward (Toronto, Ont.) hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Lye from third.
 
Team Canada went on to load the bases again in the fifth on a single by Polidori, an intentional walk to Salling and an error before Kelsey Jenkins(Delta, B.C.) hit a sacrifice fly ball of her own to center as Canada increased its lead to 4-0. Hovinga retired Guatemala in order in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the no-hitter.

Hovinga allowed only two walks and struck out five over seven innings to pick up the complete game shutout. Polidori went three-for-three at the plate with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored, while Lye contributed two singles and scored twice as well. Salling added a double and a run batted in, with Canada’s other hit going to Sarah Chow (Victoria, B.C.).
 
In the evening game against Mexico, Canada opened the scoring once again in the bottom of the first when Jenkins walked and scored on a double to the right-center field gap by Salling. Holly Speers (Surrey, B.C.) followed that up with a single to center to score Salling as Canada took a 2-0 lead against Mexico and pitcher Dallas Escobedo. In the second, Larissa Franklin (Maple Ridge, B.C.) doubled to left and was sacrificed to third but was left stranded, while Mexico got a runner on base on an error in the third but was unable to push the runner in to score.
 
The red and white added a run to its lead in the fourth when Carey-Leigh Vyse(Ohsweken, Ont.) doubled to center and scored on a single by Franklin when the shortstop’s throw got away from the first baseman. Mexico finally got to Caira in the top of the sixth by getting a two-run double on a line shot off the third baseman’s glove by Victoria Vidales with two outs to cut the lead to 3-2. Canada added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning as Hayward singled, was sacrificed to second and scored on a triple to the right field corner by Vyse. Mexico started the seventh with a pair of singles and was able to score a run on an RBI groundout later in the inning, but Caira got a big strikeout to end the game with the tying run on third base.

Caira earned the complete game win allowing three runs on four hits with six strikeouts over seven innings. Vyse hit a triple and a double and drove in a run, with Franklin getting a double and a single and Hayward notching two singles. Salling and Speers each chipped in with a hit.
 
Canada moved to 3-0 with the two wins and is scheduled to play Brazil at 1:30pm EDT on Monday.
