Canada Wins Two Bronze Medals at World Racquetball Championships
Racquetball Canada – Winnipeg, July 25, 2016 – Team Canada is coming home with two bronze medals from the 2016 World Championships held in Cali, Colombia from July 16 to 23.
Samuel Murray of Baie-Comeau had an outstanding tournament, winning bronze in the Men’s Singles event. Murray, who is only playing in his 4th major international event, looked like he may be on track to make the final but lost Friday’s semifinal to Mexico’s Daniel De La Rosa, who is ranked 3rd on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT).
The Women’s Doubles team of Frédérique Lambert of Montréal and Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg also finished in the bronze medal spot. Lambert and Saunders have several podium finishes at the international level, with this being the second medal that they have won together as doubles partners.
Mike Green of Hamilton and Tim Landeryou of Calgary moved to the consolation round after losing in the Men’s Doubles quarterfinal on Thursday. The team ended the tournament in 5th place.
Pedro Castro of Brossard, who was knocked out in the round of 32 won his consolation draw and finished in 17th place.
Christine Richardson of Regina advanced to the round of 8 and finished the tournament tied for 5th place. Michèle Morissette of Baie-Comeau advanced to the round of 16 and finished tied for 13th place.
Canada finished fourth in the men’s overall standings, fourth in the women’s overall standings and fourth in overall team standings.
