Canadian Fencing Federation – All three of Canada’s teams that were in action yesterday at the Junior Pan American Fencing Championships in Havana, Cuba came away with hardware.

Canada’s junior women’s epee team won a silver medal, narrowly losing to the USA in the final 45-42.  The team of Cindy Gao (TFC, Toronto, ON), Ariane Leonard (OM, Saint Lambert, QC), Alexanne Verret (STH, Quebec, QC) and Shirley Wang (VGO, Toronto, ON) defeated Cuba 26-22 to advance to the semi-finals.  There they faced Team Mexico and came away with the victory by a score of 34-32 to advance to the final against the USA.

Canada’s junior men’s foil team of Blake Broszus (Canadian living in the US), Alex Cai (TFC, Brampton, ON), Brandon Jalowica (DNF, Caledonia, ON) and Adam Nazarali (SSk, Saskatoon, SK) also won a silver medal, losing to a strong USA team in the final.  Canada defeated Colombia 45-17 to advance to the semi-finals where they defeated Argentina 45-41 to advance to the gold final. 

Canada’s third team that was in action was the junior women’s sabre team of Frederique Bourget (SRN, Blainville, QC), Rachel Lamarre (SRN, Blainville, QC), Veronique Lamarre (SRN, Blainville, QC), and Madison Thurgood (SSC, Edmonton, AB).  Canada defeated Brazil 45-31 to advance to the semi-finals where they faced Team Mexico, narrowly losing 45-41.  In the bronze final, Canada faced Venezuela and came out on top with a 45-40 victory to finish third overall.

Canada’s women’s foil, men’s epee and men’s sabre teams are in competition today, the last day of the Championships.  Canada currently has 10 medals with the potential to add three more.
