Canadian Fencing Federation – Friday was the last day of competition at the Cadet/Junior Pan Am Fencing Championships in Cancun, Mexico with team competition in Men’s Epee, Women’s Foil, Men’s Sabre and Mixed Team.  The Canadian teams in all four events won medals bringing the total number of medals for Canada in the competition to 22, or 20 not counting the mixed events which breaks the previous record of 19 in 2015 where no mixed events were held! Canada also won medals in all team events this year (6 weapon events and 2 mixed events), which had not been achieved in recent years.

Canada’s Junior Mixed team of Cindy Gao (women’s epee), Loup-Yann Ferre (Men’s Epee), Angela Li (Women’s Foil), Christopher Sheardown (Men’s Foil), Madison Thurgood (Women’s Sabre) and Cameron Mackay (Men’s Sabre) defeated Mexico 30-27 in the final to take home gold.

Canada’s men’s sabre team finished their day with a silver medal.  The team of Cameron Mackay (Winnipeg, MB), Falan Kennedy (Ardrossan, AB), Hunter Moricz (North Vancouver) and David Brown (Canadian in US) advanced to the final after defeating hometown Team Mexico in a close bout of 45-42.  Team Canada then faced the USA, and this time lost the close bout 45-42 to take home the silver medal.

The Women’s Foil team of Ariane Bilodeau (Outremont, QC), Ying Cao (Toronto, ON), Sarah Filby (Winnipeg, MB), and Angela Li (Toronto, ON) finished with a bronze medal after losing to Brazil, the eventual gold medalists, in the semi-final by a score of 45-29.  The team rebounded to win in the bronze final against Mexico 45-31.

The Men’s Epee team also finished with a bronze medal, losing to Venezuela in their semi-final bout.  The team of Dylan French (Richmond, BC), Matson Lalor (White Rock, BC), Loic Beaulieu (Sherbrooke, QC) and Loup Yann Ferre (Quebec, QC) won their bronze final against Mexico by a score of 45-33.

Next up for Canada’s top young athletes is the Junior/Cadet World Championships in Bourges, France from April 1 to 10, 2016.
