Canada wins back-to-back Men’s U-17 matches in Jamaica
Canada Soccer – Canada have won back-to-back Men’s U-17 International Friendly matches against Jamaica. Canada won 3:0 on Sunday and 3:1 on Tuesday 29 November, with both matches played away in Kingston, Jamaica.
The two wins wrapped up a successful 11-day camp split between Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA and Kingston, Jamaica. It was the team’s fifth camp in 2016 and the 11th overall since 2014 for the Men’s EXCEL Program’s 2000-age group (starting at the U-15 age level).
“We had a good camp and played two good international away matches,” said Paul Stalteri, Canada Soccer’s Men’s National U-17 Coach. “We battled and we came away with two results.”
On Tuesday, Canada’s goalscorers in the 3:1 win were Antonio Rocco Romeo (43′), Terique Mohammed (54′), and Olakunle Dada-Luke (89′). Jamaica’s lone goalscorer was Jamoi Topey (56′). Two days earlier, the goalscorers in Canada’s 3:0 win were Jordan Faria (15′), Alphonso Davies (37′), and Yohan Le Bourhis (47′).
Jake Ruby was Canada’s man of the match on Sunday while Mohammed was Canada’s man of the match on Tuesday.
“Our first half (on Tuesday) featured some of our best football this year,” said Stalteri.
In 2016, Canada have posted three wins and three losses in six international matches. The international competition has helped Canada prepare for the 2017 CONCACAF Men’s Under-17 Championship, to be played from 21 April to 7 May in Panama.
“This was one of our objectives with this (November) camp, to face an opponent like Jamaica that is athletic and to match some of the conditions similar to what we will face in Panama,” said Stalteri.
From Canada Soccer’s Men’s EXCEL Program, only players born 2000 or later are eligible for next year’s CONCACAF and FIFA U-17 tournaments. Next year’s CONCACAF Men’s Under-17 Championship kicks off 21 April, with the draw expected to take place in December 2016. From 12 nations, the top four in CONCACAF will qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 from 6-28 October.
