Softball Canada​ – Santo Domingo, D.R. – Canada took the bronze medal at the IX Pan American Women’s Softball Championship following an 11-3 loss to the United States. Team Canada jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but the Americans powered through with a big fifth inning to win the game in five innings on the run-ahead rule.
Team Canada got off to a great start as Kelsey Jenkins (Delta, B.C.) drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second and scored on a double by Erika Polidori (Brantford, Ont.) before Holly Speers (Surrey, B.C.) hit a two-run homerun to give Canada a quick 3-0 lead. The Americans scored one run in the top of the second and two more to tie the game at 3-3 after three innings of play.
Michelle Moultrie gave the United States the lead with a three-run homerun in the fourth, and the Americans got five consecutive RBI singles in the fifth to take an 11-3 lead. Joey Lye (Toronto, Ont.) hit a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth but the next batter grounded out to third to end the game on the run-ahead rule.

Jenna Caira (Toronto, Ont.) started the game in the pitcher’s circle for Canada and allowed three runs on four hits and four walks to go along with three strikeouts in three innings. Sara Plourde (Baker Lake, N.B.) pitched the last two innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. At the plate, Speers connected with the two-run homerun while Polidori doubled and drove in a run and Lye added a single.
The loss gave Canada the bronze medal at the event, while the United States went on to defeat Mexico in the Gold medal game.
Team Canada will now travel to Los Angeles before heading to Japan to compete in the Japan Cup from August 25-27.
