Volleyball Canada – LIMA, Peru, June 20 2017 – Canada pulled off a spectacular comeback victory from a 0-2 deficit to upset hosts Peru 3-2 (21-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-17,18-16) in Pool B of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum on Tuesday night.
 
Shainah Joseph (Ottawa, ON) stood out with 25 points to lead the Canadian victory, while the trio of Kyla Richey (Roberts Creek, BC), Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, ON) and Lucy Charuk (Tsawwassen, BC) contributed 14 points each. Peru’s Carla Rueda and Angela Leyva finished with 25 and 20 points, respectively, in the losing effort.
 
The victory keeps Canada’s options of advancing to the quarterfinals alive as the North American side is tied with Cuba both with 2-2 win-loss records and nine points.
 
Today (June 21) Cuba meets Trinidad & Tobago while Canada plays Chile. If both teams win their contests 3-0, then the deciding factor would be the points-ratio. Cuba enters Wednesday at 1.021 to Canada’s 0.944.
 
“This match was a real test for us,” said Marcello Abbondanza, Canada’s head coach. “For sure I am very happy with the outcome. These are the kind of matches that help us grow as a team.”
