Canadian Lacrosse Association – NETANYA, ISRAEL – Following a handful of practices, a powerful day of touring holy sites in the Old City of Jerusalem, and an impressive opening ceremony, the Canadian men’s field lacrosse team is now ready to hit the field at the 2018 FIL Men’s Lacrosse World Championship in Netanya, Israel.

The tournament officially kicked off earlier today with opening ceremonies that featured performances from Israeli artists and a procession of all 46 teams and nearly 2,000 athletes in Netanya Stadium. Canada begins their title defense on July 13 against England at 2:00PM ET at the Wingate Institute.

The majority of Canada’s games will be broadcasted on TSN 2, some live and some on tape delay. The tournament semi-finals and finals will also be carried by the network. Visit www.tsn.ca/live/schedule or check your local listings for the latest and most accurate broadcast times in your region.

The Canadians are looking to capture their second consecutive World Championship title after defeating the United States 8-5 in the finals four years ago. The U.S. and Canada are the only two countries to ever win the senior men’s tournament, with the Canada claiming gold in 1978 in Stockport, England, 2006 in London, Ontario and 2014 in Denver, Colorado.

The team arrived in the beautiful Israeli costal city of Netanya the morning of July 10, following a weekend training camp in Oakville, Ont. With a few practices, and a controlled scrimmage against Belgium, under their belt, and the jet lag sorted out, they are excited to hit the field.

“It was pretty tough when we first got here to get adjusted, but we got a few good night’s sleep and are ready to go,” said attack Mark Matthews, a native of Oshawa, Ont. “It was fun to play against somebody other than your own guys,” he added, referencing the scrimmage against the Belgians. “We were able to run a lot of sets and get more comfortable as an offense.”

In addition to on field activities, the team had the opportunity to tour the Old City of Jerusalem on July 11, which included stops at holy sites such as the Western Wall, Jaffa Gate, Mount of Olives and Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

“Getting to tour through there [Jerusalem], one of the most famous cities in the world, for a few hours today was awesome,” added Matthews. “Getting to see all those historic places and learning interesting facts was great.”
