Canada Qualifies Two Skiers to Men’s Halfpipe Finals
Freestyle Canada – Top Qualifier Mike Riddle looks to defend Silver medal from 2014 Sochi Games
Vancouver, BC – With the pipe still hot from teammate Cassie Sharpe’s gold medal victory, Canada’s men’s halfpipe team dropped in for their qualification round, where the field of 24 would have two chances to make the cut to the top 12 for finals.
Led by defending Olympic silver medallist Mike Riddle, Team Canada also featured two-time Olympian Noah Bowman and Simon d’Artois, who is making his Olympic debut.
Riddle was the top qualifier for Canada, advancing in 7th position with a high score of 82.20, which Riddle secured in his final run.
“Not landing my first run added some stress for sure,” commented Riddle. “But I was happy to ski a clean second run and advance. Now I can focus on finals and hopefully bring a medal home for Canada.”
Riddle’s teammate Noah Bowman, the 26-year-old from Calgary, AB, was ranked 8th in the world coming into this contest and would advance to finals in 9th position with a high score of 77.20. He is looking to improve upon his 5th place finish from the 2014 Sochi Games, where he made his debut.
“I’m a lot more focussed this time around,” commented Bowman. “I have more confidence in my skiing and I really appreciate being here. This is probably the best pipe we’ve ever skied, so my goal is to just ski to my full potential here.”
Making his Olympic debut was Whistler’s Simon d’Artois, the only Canadian man to win X Games gold in halfpipe. Unfortunately, d’Artois did not advance to finals, finishing just outside the qualifying window in 13th position with a score of 66.60.
Also advancing to finals was a large contingent of skiers from the United States, including reigning Olympic gold medalist David Wise, the youngest ever X Games gold medallist Torrin Yater-Wallace and the top ranked halfpipe skier in the world Alex Ferreira.
