Canada Moves to Quarterfinals of Women’s Pan Am Cup
July 11, 2019
Volleyball Canada - TRUJILLO, Peru, July 11, 2019 - After a one-sided win over Guatemala 3-0 (25-6, 25-5, 25-8), Canada’s women’s team finishes third in its pool and next plays in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The match versus Guatemala on Wednesday set a new record for the most lopsided match in the history of the Women’s Pan American Cup. It was the all-time lowest scoring match with only 94 points and a difference of 56 points in the total points for the sides (75-19).
On Tuesday, it was a different story as Canada battled Dominican Republic in pool play ending in a five-set loss 3-2 (25-18, 25-27, 21-25, 25-14, 15-13). This put the Dominican team in first place in the pool and they directly advance to the semis. Argentina ended up second in the pool. The U.S. went undefeated in Group B and also advances directly to semis.
“We’re excited to begin the playoff round of this tournament,” said Canada’s head coach Tom Black. "The team has grinded for quite a while now in Peru over the course of two different tournaments (previously the VNL Challenger, which Canada won). And now we’re in the home stretch and looking forward to competing."
Canada will play Puerto Rico in the quarters tomorrow (6 pm local), but today is a day off for all teams.
"We had an opportunity to rest some players yesterday (vs Guatemala) who had been carrying a high volume, and today brings the same opportunity. We’ve already played a bunch of very competitive matches and we only expect that to continue."
