Canada is ready to take on Pan Am rivals in Gatineau
Volleyball Canada – GATINEAU, QC: The Robert Guertin Centre in Gatineau will heat up next week as pool play for the XII Men’s Pan American Cup begins.
Today Canada confirmed its roster.
“We have a fairly youthful group of players on this developmental team with the exception of senior team veteran Max Burt,” said Canada’s coach Larry McKay. “Eleven of our players came out of our university leagues in 2017 (including two each from McMaster, UBC and Trinity Western). A typical Team Canada men’s volleyball group, these players have put in many months, weeks, days and hours training together. We are looking forward to playing against these experienced national teams here at home in Gatineau.”
Pool A consists of defending champions Cuba, Dominican Republic, United States and Mexico and Pool B is composed by Argentina, Puerto Rico, Canada and Venezuela.
The pool winners advance directly to the semifinals while the teams placed second and third will play crossed matches in quarterfinals.
Cuba has won two of the last three editions of the event; the United States has won five titles and Brazil (not attending this year) three. Mexico is the other country with a gold medal.
The Pan Am Cup is the only competition this year for this Canadian squad. The senior A team, which recently picked up a bronze medal at the World League Group 1 Finals, continues its season in August with a tournament in Poland and the NORCECA championship in the U.S later in the season.
The Pan Am Cup is a great opportunity for volleyball fans in the Ottawa-Gatineau area to see some high-level men’s volleyball in their own back yards. Tickets available at : coupepanamcup.eventbrite.ca Matches during pool play are held at 2, 4, 6 and 8 pm.
