Canada Soccer – Canada won 2:0 over Suriname to collect three points and close out their group phase at the 2017 CONCACAF Men’s Under-17 Championship. Jonathan David scored on either side of the break as Canada won the Friday night match at Estadio Maracaná in Panama.

MATCH CENTRE – CANADA 2:0 SURINAME

“We gave Suriname no chances and we took them out of the game from the start to finish,” said Paul Stalteri, Canada Soccer’s Men’s National U-17 Team Coach. “We won most of our battles, we created a lot of chances, and we were able to expose them in what we deemed was their weakness from before the game. Our boys executed the plan and we came away with the victory.”

Canada created chances from the opening whistle and even hit the post in the 10th minute. Just three minutes later, a lovely give-and-go between Jake Ruby and David led to the opening goal. Into the box, David dribbled past a defender and then the goalkeeper before tapping the ball into the back of the open net.

In the second half, some good work by Luca Petrasso pushed the ball forward to David who then split the defence at the top of the box and beat the goalkeeper with his shot.

“It was a good game and it was important because we didn’t want to leave without a victory,” said centre back Yohan Le Bourhis. “We just focused on the match and we leave now with a win and a smile.”

Canada scored in all three matches at the CONCACAF Men’s Under-17 Championship, with goals by Antonio Rocco Romeo against Costa Rica, Alessandro Hojabrpour against Cuba, and David twice against Suriname. Jordan Faria earned man of the match honours in the first two matches while Benson Fazili earned man of the match honours in the win over Suriname.

“They responded well from two disappointing results,” said Stalteri. “The performances weren’t poor, but with no points from the first two games you are out of the group. Still, the boys handled themselves like young, aspiring professionals and we came away with the result after another good performance.”

The CONCACAF Men’s Under-17 Championship provides an important opportunity for player development along the Canada Soccer Pathway. The Canadian program aims to develop players that are adaptable to play against any opponent while also expanding the players’ knowledge of CONCACAF environments and opponents.

Canada Soccer’s Men’s EXCEL Program channels our nation’s exceptional players into the best soccer environments. The Canada Soccer Pathway works in collaboration with our provincial and territorial partners as well as the professional clubs and academies. For Canada’s elite players, the program emphasizes player development on the pathway to representing Canada’s Men’s National Team in international soccer.

As these players develop through the Canadian program, the 2000-born players are also eligible for the upcoming CONCACAF and FIFA U-20 competitions in 2019 as well as the Olympic U-23 cycle through 2020.
