Canada finishes 23rd in group competition at the 2018 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships
Gymnastics Canada – SOFIA, BUL (September 15, 2018) – The group all-around competition of the 2018 FIG Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships wrapped up in Sofia, Bulgaria on Saturday, with Canada finishing 23rd overall with 32.250 points.
The Canadian group is made up of 2017 World Championship veterans Elizabet Belittchenko, Vanessa Panov, Anastasia Shanko, and Alexandra Udachina and newcomer Alexandra Zilyuk. With their 23rd place finish, the women qualified Canada for the group all-around competition at the 2019 World Championships in Baku, AZE.
Canada scored 16.700 in the five hoops routine and finished the all-around competition with a score of 15.550 in the three balls and two ropes apparatus.
“The group has had strong practices leading up to the World Championships and we felt honoured to represent Canada,” said Panov. “We’re proud of our work despite the few mistakes today. A couple team members have been dealing with injuries and we’re fortunate it didn’t impact us too much. There’s a lot of work ahead of us and we’re eager and looking forward to next year’s Worlds now that we’ve qualified. Thank you to Gymnastics Canada staff, our coaches, parents, physiotherapists, and the CSIO support received from our nutritionist and mental performance coach.”
“In general, the group increased their difficulty scores, which are comparable to many countries, however it was the execution that affected our ranking today,” said group coach Mira Filipova. “The next goal is to improve the execution scores at the upcoming Senior Pan American Championships.”
The Canadian group will join individual rhythmic gymnasts Alexandra Chtrevenskii, Carmen Whelan, Katherine Uchida, and Sophie Crane at the 2018 Senior Pan American Championships from September 28 – 30 in Lima, Peru.
