Volleyball Canada – Beach recap

Aug. 15: Canada’s Heather Bansley and Sarah Pavan finished fifth overall after a quarterfinal loss yesterday at the Copacabana beach arena.

Although the Canadians had a strong record against this German team, on Sunday Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst dominated winning 2-0 (21-14, 21-14).

Winning four out of their five matches, Bansley and Pavan became the second Canadian women’s team to advance to the Olympic quarterfinals to match the Athens 2004 Games achievement by Guylaine Dumont and Annie Martin.

“Obviously it’s not the way we wanted it to end,” said Pavan. “If we lost that game and played our best, that would be one thing, but I think we left a lot out there. It’s hard to swallow, but I can’t take anything away from Germany, they are an incredible team and they played unbelievably well.”

Canada finished the beach tournament with a best-ever three teams in the top 10 of the standings.

“We’re disappointed, but it has definitely been an honour to play here and to hopefully inspire others to play volleyball and beach volleyball,” said Pavan.
