Kyle Wiltjer scored a game-high 21 points for Canada in his FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Americas Qualifiers debut.  Phil Scrubb added 16 points of his own, while Brady Heslip had 14 points in the loss. Joel Anthony finished with a double-double, scoring 11 points to go along with 10 rebounds and three blocks. Jose Vargas led Venezuela with 15 points.

After a back and forth first quarter, Canada and Venezuela were all even at 17 points apiece after the opening 10 minutes of action.

The story was much the same in the second as Venezuela established a five point lead midway through the frame.  Canada would work to shrink the deficit and a Thomas Scrubb bucket as time expires tied the game 37-37 at halftime.

In a hostile road environment, Canada hung with Venezuela in the third quarter.  After trailing by as many as six points for portions of the frame, the red and white reduced Venezuela’s lead to as low as a point before ending the quarter trailing 59-55.

The Canadians continued to push the home side but couldn’t complete the comeback, ultimately falling 84-76.

With the loss, Canada (7-2) sits in second place in Group F with three games remaining.  The three highest-placed teams from each group and the best fourth placed team between Group E and Group F (a total of seven teams) will qualify for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019.
