Water Polo Canada – Kunshan, China, May 29, 2018 – The Canadian women’s team faced a big challenge on the second day of the FINA World League Super Final in Kunshan, China. Despite matching their opponents in two of the four quarters, a five-goal run by the United States in the third quarter made the task difficult for the Canadian women. In the end, Canada was not able to able to overcome the difference, and the US recorded their second win of the tournament (12-5).

The United States opened the scoring in the first quarter. Canada’s answer came from Emma Wright on the power play. USA doubled their lead before the end of the first period (3-1). Both teams exchanged goals in the second quarter, the Americans scored twice early on, just to see Canada’s Joelle Bekhazi and Shae Fournier tally one for the red and white to keep the score at 5-3.

The American squad came out strong in the third quarter, capitalizing on every opportunity to extend their lead. The Canadians were unable to pass the US defense in this quarter, taking shots and trying the to beat the goalkeeper from outside. Trailing by seven heading in the fourth quarter, the Canadian squad was looking to create something offensively. Monika Eggens found the back of the net in the opening minutes, but the USA answered back right away. Shae Fournier scored one from outside, but the difference was just too much to overcome for the Canadian team, and the United States recorded a 12-5 win.

Russia won their matchup against Japan 22-10 in the other match of Group B. The Canadian women will face Japan tomorrow (May 30) at 6:00 pm local / 6:00 am EDT. All the games are live streamed on FINA TV.
