Canada Basketball  – SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL (December 3, 2018) – Canada’s Senior Men’s National Team defeated Brazil 94-67 on Monday night to qualify for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019.

Canada’s victory improved their record to 8-2 and with just two games remaining in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Americas Qualifiers, guaranteed a berth in next summer’s FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019.

For the second game in a row, Kyle Wiltjer led all scorers with a game-high 25 points and seven rebounds for Canada. Phil Scrubb added 15 points and six assists, while his brother, Thomas Scrubb, scored 14 points of his own in the victory. Duane Notice and Kyle Landry finished with 10 points each.  Marquinhos Sousa scored a team-high 17 points for Brazil.

Trailing Brazil by just two points after the first quarter, Canada exploded in the second with an 8-0 run to re-establish the lead.  Outscoring Brazil 19-4 helped the Canadians establish a comfortable lead and entered halftime with an 11 point advantage, 45-34.  

With a berth in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 in sight, Canada continued their offensive explosion in the second half. A 31-18 advantage for the red and white in the third quarter saw the lead grow to 24 with 10 minutes to play.

Outscoring Brazil for the third quarter in a row, Canada punched their ticket to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 with a 94-67 victory.

Canada becomes the 18th team to qualify for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019, joining:

Tournament hosts: China

Africa: Angola, Nigeria, Tunisia

Americas: Argentina, Canada, USA, Venezuela

Asia: Australia, Korea, New Zealand

Europe: Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Lithuania, Spain, Turkey

Canada’s appearance at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 will be the team’s 14th at the tournament and the first since the 2010 FIBA World Championship.
