Canada at the CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship
Canada Soccer – Canada will play three matches in four days in the opening phase of the 2017 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship. From the four-nation, round robin group, only two will advance to the championship round with hopes of qualifying for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017.
All three Canada matches will be broadcast live on CONCACAF’s Facebook channel, with opponents Barbados (20 February), Mexico (21 February), and Guadeloupe (23 February) to follow in succession. Canada Soccer will also provide in-match updates on Twitter as well as post-match coverage on CanadaSoccer.com.
In all, 16 nations are left vying for two CONCACAF spots at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017. All 16 nations will play six matches at the 2017 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship, with both elimination and seeding matches scheduled through to championship final on 26 February.
Kyt Selaidopoulos, Canada Soccer’s National Beach Soccer Coach, has already promised a very organised and structured squad. The former player-turned-coach believes Canada has a competitive team that will represent Canada at their best.
“Our players understand the importance of performing in CONCACAF and representing Canada,” said Selaidopoulos. “We have a side that won’t quit, so that will be our strength. We also have a united group and that will give us an edge in this competition.”
Of the 11 players in the Canadian squad, seven have previously represented Canada at a CONCACAF competition, be it men’s soccer (Adrian Cann at the CONCACAF Gold Cup), Beach Soccer (Vincent Cournoyer), or Futsal (six players). Coach Selaidopoulos has been in charge of both the futsal and beach soccer programs since 2016, so he knows the core of this group understands what is needed both on and off the field in a CONCACAF competition.
This will mark Canada’s fifth participation at the CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship since 2006, not counting their participation in a CONCACAF-CONMEBOL qualification tournament in 2005. Canada finished CONCACAF runners up in 2006 to qualify for the FIFA Beach World Cup in Brazil in that year.
