Canada advances to final of Men’s NORCECA Championship

DURANGO, Mexico, August 23, 2021: Canada is awarded a spot in the FIVB 2022 World Championship and will face Puerto Rico for the Men’s NORCECA Continental Championship title today after beating Mexico 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-18) in semifinals on Sunday night.

Canada won the event in 2015, but Puerto Rico will be looking for its first podium appearance in the history of the event. The top two teams from this event win the berth to the 2022 FIVB World Championship, which will be held in Russia.

Before yesterday’s contest, Mexico had not dropped a match in pool play and advanced directly to the semis. Canada had to play in the quarterfinals on Saturday – beating the U.S. in five sets.

Captain Brett Walsh commented on the win over Mexico: “Our biggest difference was our service pressure, we just put the ball in their court and made them play a lot more than our previous match against them; our block did a good job as well. A final is always a fun game to play … we’re going to show up with the same energy as today and give it our best shot to win.”
