Speed Skating Canada – The ISU Short Track World Cup will take place Nov. 4-6 at the Olympic Oval

Calgary, November 2, 2016 – Calgary will host the first ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating stage of the new pre-olympic season as the competition will take place Nov. 4-6 at the Olympic Oval.

A total of 186 speed skaters – 81 women and 105 men – representing 32 countries will battle in the two 500m races, the 1000m event, the 1500m as well as the men’s and women’s relay at this World Cup stage, as the ISU circuit will be back at Calgary’s Olympic Oval for the first time since October of 2012.

10 Olympic medalists from Sochi on hand, including St-Gelais and Hamelin
The Canadian team will be led by Olympic medalists Charles Hamelin, Marianne St-Gelais, Marie-Eve Drolet, Valérie Maltais, Charle Cournoyer and François Hamelin. In total, fans will be able to see 10 individual medalists from the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi in action, as well as 12 medalists from the 2016 World Championships that were held in Seoul, South Korea.

Fans of speed, excitement and competition at the highest level will not be disappointed.  The top 10 male and female skaters in the world according to 2016 World Championship rankings, except two in the men’s side, will be on hand for this best on best event. This includes overall winners Minjeong Choi (KOR) and Tianyu Han (CHN). Among the other headliners in action will be Olympic medalists from the 2014 Games Kexin Fan (CHN), Arianna Fontana (ITA) and Suk Hee Shim (KOR) on the women’s side, as well as Dajung Wu (CHN), Sjinkie Knegt (NED), Victor An (RUS) and Han on the men’s side.

Qualifying for all races slated over the weekend at the Calgary World Cup will take place on Friday, November 4, while the repechage heats and the finals in the first 500m of the stage and the 1500m as well as the relay semifinals will follow on Saturday, November 5. Repechage heats and the finals for the second 500m and for the 1000m as well as the relay finals will be held on Sunday, November 6.

As per ISU rules, competitors will be allowed to skate in only one individual distance per day at the World Cup, in addition to taking part in the relay. One of the events is always held twice at each of the World Cup stages, meaning that at the end of the season, each distance will have taken place eight times. In Calgary, there will be two of the always exciting 500m races.

Broadcast on CBC and Radio-Canada
The races will be broadcast live on CBC, the official Canadian broadcaster of the competition, on Saturday, November 5, from 5 pm to 6 pm, Eastern time.

The final rounds on Saturday and Sunday will be webcast live in English at cbcsports.ca and in French at radiocanada.ca as of 3 pm (ET) on each day.

Activities for the entire family
In addition to the action on the ice, spectators will also be able to enjoy different activities throughout the weekend.

At the end of each day of racing, Saturday and Sunday, members of the Canadian national team will be available to sign autographs at Speed Skating Canada’s stand located in the Fan Zone.

Alongside the athletes will be Calgary-based author and sports reporter Lisa Bowes, who will be on hand to present her book ‘Lucie Tries Short Track’. Part of the proceeds from the book sales will go to Speed Skating Canada’s Youth Development Fund which helps support young Canadian speed skaters through programs that aim to develop clubs and their members, as well as coaches and officials.

Also, a fundraising activity that will lead to a ’50/50′ type draw will be held throughout the weekend to help support speed skating in Alberta. The draw will take place on the Sunday, before the relay finals.
