Tennis Canada – Quebec, September 15, 2016 – The two remaining Canadians in the singles draw at the National Bank Cup presented by Mazda, Eugenie Bouchard (Montreal, QC) and Françoise Abanda (Montreal, QC),  were defeated in the second round on Thursday night at PEPS on the campus of Laval University.

During Thursday’s night session, Bouchard and Abanda had the chance to take two of the four spots remaining in the final eight. For her part, top-seeded Bouchard was upset 6-2, 6-3 by Russian Alla Kudryavtseva.

“The province of Quebec has good vibes for me, I have to say, I love Canada, it’s amazing,” Kudryavtseva said after the match. “The knowledgeable tennis people always come. They cheer for their favourites, but at the same time they’re not disrespectful, they’re appreciative of a good match. “It’s a pleasure to play here in Quebec and all of Canada.”

Abanda closed the night with a close 7-6(2), 7-5 loss Jessica Pegula to make it four Americans in the quarter-finals.

In the opening match of the day, Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck advanced to the quarter-finals thanks to a 6-3, 6-4 win over Czech Barbora Stefkova 6-3, 6-4. Océane Dodin reached her first career WTA quarter-final after defeating American Sachia Vickery.
