Black dominates Paris World Challenge Cup medaling on every apparatus
Gymnastics Canada – PARIS, FRA (September 30, 2018) – It was a weekend of domination for Ellie Black of Halifax, NS at the World Challenge Cup in Paris France as the reigning all-around world silver medallist finished the competition with four medals including one gold, two silver, and one bronze.
In the qualifying competition, a few mistakes on beam placed Black fourth overall heading into Sunday’s final. In the final, Black laid down a solid routine and scored 13.900 points – 1.500 points ahead of her qualifying score of 12.400 – to stand atop the podium with the gold medal.
Black added two silvers to her medal haul with a score of 13.050 points on floor and 14.200 points on vault. To round out the apparatus finals, Black secured the bronze medal on the uneven bars with a score of 13.600 points.
“It was great to get out competing again, and to use this experience to work towards the World Championships,” said Black following competition. “It was a fun competition and I’m thrilled with Team Canada’s results.”
In the men’s competition, Canadian pommel horse champion Thierry Pellerin of Lévis, QC capped off a strong weekend performance with a silver medal in the pommel horse final. Competition was tight and Pellerin’s score of 14.650 points put him just .200 back of the French gymnast in first and .100 ahead of Slovenia in third. This is Pellerin’s second pommel horse medal this season, having won gold at the Portugal World Challenge Cup this past June.
“It’s an incredible feeling to win my second career international medal,” said Pellerin. “This competition was one of the biggest and most important on the World Challenge Cup circuit and coming away with a silver medal is even more satisfying especially with the caliber of gymnasts competing. With the experience I’ve gained through competing internationally, I’m starting to learn how to use the competition pressure to my advantage and am starting to develop rituals before I compete, which seems to be working well. I’m looking forward to taking the energy and momentum back home as I prepare for my next World Cup in Germany.”
