Sport Nova Scotia – HALIFAX, NS (Thursday, September 22, 2016) – August’s Female Individual Athlete of the Month honours are awarded to twenty year-old Ellie Black of Halifax for her performance at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio. Black placed fifth in the All Around final with a score of 58.298, a best-ever finish for a Canadian woman in this event. This was Black’s second appearance at the Olympic Games, her first being at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.

Fifteen year old Riley Deveau of Church Point has been named August’s Male Individual Athlete of the Month. Deveau had a strong showing at the 2016 Junior Pan American Karate Championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador placing fifth in the Cadet-57kg category. Earlier in the year, Deveau won gold in the same category at the Karate Canada National Championships.

Female Team Athlete of the Month honours have been awarded to twenty-seven year old Jenna Pelham of Halifax for her result at the 2016 World Rowing Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Pelham and her boat placed fifth in the women’s lightweight quadruple sculls event. Pelham is a member of the North Star Rowing Club in Dartmouth.

Another rower, twenty-one year old Cody Bailey, has been named Male Team Athlete of the Month for his performance at the 2016 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Cody and his partner, Trevor Jones (Ontario), placed fifth in the men’s double sculls event. Bailey is a member of the Mic Mac Amateur Aquatic Club in Dartmouth.

Team Rafuse Boyd, comprising of Erin Rafuse and Danielle Boyd, has been awarded Team of the Month honours for their performance at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio. Competing in their first Olympic Games, Team Rafuse Boyd finished in 16th place overall in the 49er FX Class.

The Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
